F05 Error on an Ariston Washer: Meaning and a Step-by-Step Fix

Your Ariston washer has stopped mid-cycle, the water is standing inside it, and the display reads F05? Take a breath — it’s one of the gentler codes you can see: the meaning is clear, the causes are limited, and a large share of it is solved at home without a technician at all.

F05 on Ariston washers means: a water-drainage problem — the washer is trying to expel the water and can’t within its set time, so it stops the program and tells you. The water leaves the washer through one channel: drum → filter → pump → hose. Any congestion in that channel = F05. Let’s walk through it in order.

Step 1: clean the pump filter (the first and most common fix)

This filter is the trap for lint, coins and forgotten tissues — its job is to protect the pump, and its price is that it clogs over time. Its location: a small door at the bottom of the washer’s front.

The right method: Unplug the washer and close the water tap. Put a large towel and a flat dish under the small door — a fair amount of water will come out, that’s the standing drum water. Open the filter cover slowly (screw anticlockwise) and let the water drain in stages. Take out the filter and you’ll find the treasures: matted lint, coins, hair clips, buttons. Clean it under running water with a brush. Look inside the filter opening with a torch — in many pumps you’ll see the pump impeller: turn it with your finger, it should spin freely with slight resistance. Put the filter back and tighten it well (so it doesn’t leak), and run a drain or short rinse program to test.

The code gone and the water drained? Congratulations — note this: clean this filter once a month and F05 usually won’t visit you again.

Step 2: check the drain hose

If the filter is sound and the code remains, the second step is outside the washer: The kink: is the hose squeezed between the washer and the wall? kinked on itself? Correct its path. The depth: if the hose goes into the drain pipe more than 15 cm, it may siphon and pull water back — pull it out a little. The height: the hose end should be at roughly 60–100 cm from the floor (check your model’s manual) — not on the floor and not higher. The blockage: detach the hose from the drain side and try passing water through it into the sink — sometimes it’s blocked by the kitchen drain pipes themselves, not the washer.

Step 3: listen to the pump’s sound

Run a drain program and put your ear (or your phone recording) near the bottom of the washer: A light, regular hum + water draining = the pump works, and the problem was the filter/hose. A hum with no water at all = the pump is trying and can’t — its impeller is broken or its coil weakened. It needs changing. Complete silence = the pump isn’t getting a command at all — it could be the pump, and it could be the board or the level sensor. Here the diagnosis is with a meter.

In the last two cases — this is our job: the drain pump is one of the parts our technicians carry ready and genuine, and the change is done in a single visit with a full program test in front of you.

A few things to keep in mind

Empty pockets before washing — a single coin can stop the pump impeller and show you F05. A washer standing with water inside, don’t force its door open — use the drain program or the pump filter to empty it first. And if F05 appears and disappears on its own, don’t relax — that’s a partial blockage growing, and cleaning the filter now is cheaper than a pump later.

Frequently asked questions

What does the F05 code mean on an Ariston washer?

It means the washer tried to drain the water and couldn't within the set time — either the filter is blocked, the hose is kinked or blocked, or the drain pump itself has tired. Start by cleaning the pump filter — it solves most cases.

Where is the pump filter on an Ariston washer?

A small door at the bottom of the washer's front (usually on the right). Unplug it first, put a towel and a flat dish underneath because water will come out, open the cover slowly, take out the filter and clean it of lint and coins, and put it back tightly.

I cleaned the filter and the code still shows — what's next?

Check the drain hose: not kinked? not inserted too deep into the drain pipe? at the right height? Then listen to the pump's sound at the end of the program: a hum with no draining = the pump usually needs changing — a common part the technician carries ready.

Does changing the drain pump cost a lot and take time?

One of the most common and fastest repairs: a genuine pump is changed in a single visit at home. The inspection is free and the final price is stated before the work, and the repair and part carry a written 6-month warranty.
